City’s storm drains in ‘appalling condition’ says Ó Conchúir

Galway city’s storm drains are in “appalling condition” and suffering from neglect, with the D’Alton Place area of Salthill the “worst example”.

This is the view of Sinn Féin Galway City West candidate Cathal Ó Conchúir who argues that almost all of the city’s drainage network “seems to be periodically blocked” leading to “regular flooding of streets, particularly in residential areas”.

Mr Ó Conchúir was keen to point out that he was not laying blame for this situation at the feet of the Galway City Council’s maintenance staff. He said the “current local representatives are failing their constituents” by not having tackled this issue over the last five years.

According to Mr Ó Conchúir, one particular gully in D’Alton Place “has been completely silted up for almost a decade”, which leads to “regular flooding”.

He is now calling on the council to deal with this issue “as a matter of urgency”.

“Someone is responsible for this state of affairs,” he says. “People are rightly querying what they pay their taxes for.”
