Galway City Museum has opened two new exhibitions for those interested in either music or maritime history.
The first exhibtion tells the story of the iconic Galway hooker boat, unique to the west coast of Ireland and regularly spotted on Galway Bay. It recalls the pivotal role these vessels played in the social and working lives of Galway’s coastal communities through artifacts, text, and imagery. This is a long-term exhibition created in-house, accessible on the first floor of the museum.
The second exhibition is Music on the Water, a selection of paintings by Maurice Quillinan, accompanied by music from pianist Nicholas Ross and composer Kent Holiday. This exhibition explores the ‘‘Golden Section’’, which is a mathematical subdivision of a surface area or a musical score. This exhibition will be open to the public until September 2014.
Both exhibitions were officially launched by Mayor Padraig Conneely on Friday May 9.
The Galway City Museum is open from 10am until 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and on Sundays from 12 noon to 5pm, with admission being free.
