ME expert to speak in Galway

A leading international ME expert will speak about the condition in the city at the weekend.

Dr Charles Shepherd, the honorary medical adviser to the (UK ) ME Association, will give a talk entitled, “ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Where are we now with research, diagnosisand management?”atthe Connacht Hotel, Dublin Road, on Saturday at 2pm.

The physician developed the condition following an episode of chickenpox that he contracted from one of his hospital patients.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Irish ME/CFS Association andwillmarkME AwarenessMonth. Admission is €5 (on the door ).

Dr Shepherd, the author of Living with ME - the Chronic, Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome, will arrive here fresh from a major conference on the subject which was held in San Francisco.

Hewillshare information he learned from that conference at the Galway meeting. Following the talk there will be a questions-and-answer session.

Orla Ni Chomhrai, the co-ordinator of the Galway ME/CFS support group, says Dr Shepherd’s book, Living with ME was one of the first publications she read on ME when she was originally diagnosed with the condition many years ago.

“It really helped me to get a better understanding of the condition and of how to manage it as best I could. In the years since, I have seen the work Dr Shepherd has done for patients with ME/CFS as honorary medical advisor tothe[UK]ME Association.

“I admire his many efforts to make life better for people with ME by increasing knowledge of the condition, both among lay people and the medical profession, as well as his effortstogetmore research done into the condition."
