Ireland West Airport Knock welcomed the announcement by the Government of the construction of a new motorway between the towns of Gort and Tuam, which when complete will provide improved access and shorter journey times between Galway and Ireland West Airport Knock.
The 57km four-lane motorway, which will cost in the region of €550 million, will cut 20 minutes off the travel time between Tuam and Gort and will provide a major boost for the western region. The construction work is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Welcoming the announcement by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar and Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin, managing director for Ireland West Airport Knock, Joe Gilmore, said; “Today’s announcement is great news for the west of Ireland and in particular for the airport. More than 75,000 people from the Galway region use the airport every year while a further 100,000 overseas visitors travelling through the airport visit Galway.
“When the new motorway is complete the shorter journey time will make our airport even more convenient for the people of Galway providing even easier access to our network of 28 international destinations.”
