Local GAA club, Fr Griffins Éire Óg, has launched an initiative to promote Gaelic football in the city centre.
Weekly sessions are due to commence on Saturday at 11am and every Saturday thereafter at two locations, South Park in the Claddagh and at Crestwood pitch.
The sessions, which are branded Peil Pal, will be conducted with an emphasis on fun and participation, using the Go Games model to ensure that all participants will enjoy the experience and learn the skills of Gaelic football.
The sessions are for boys and girls aged from four to 14 with those from Baile an Choiste, Castlegar, Crestwood, Castlelawn, Doughiska, Dún na Coiribe, Dyke/Coolough Road, Headford Road, Killoughter, Menlo and Terryland, using the Crestwood Pitch. South Park in the Claddagh will be the venue for children from Bohermore, College Road, The Claddagh, Glenburren, city centre, Lough Atalia, Presentation Road, Riverside, The West/Dominick Street, University Road and Woodquay.
Fr Griffins Éire Óg's juvenile chairman Alan Campbell says Peil Pal is aimed at bringing fun and excitement to games in various areas of Galway city.
"We have recently reorganised the juvenile section at the club and I am delighted with the support we are getting for this new venture, "he says. "We have recently had a very successful training course for our coaches who will deliver this programme.”
Club chairman Thomas Cox says the reaction from parents and schools in the area has been very positive.
“Boys and girls will experience a fun atmosphere while learning the skills of Gaelic football. The sessions will be based on the very successful Go Games model, street leagues, tournaments and fun days.”
