GMIT Students’ Union took home a record three awards at last Thursday's National Student Achievement Awards in Dublin Castle, which was attended by President Michael D Higgins and hosted by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI ).
Having been nominated in four categories, GMITSU beat off strong competition from universities and institutes of technology to win the Student Leader of the Year, Education Campaign, and Student Engagement Activity of the Year awards. This is the first time that a GMIT Students’ Union president has won Student Leader of the Year.
SU president Sam O’Neill commented: “We're proud to have won in these three categories. While I am personally delighted to win the Student Leader of the Year award, these awards are testament to the work of the entire students’ union team, the class reps, executive and everybody else who supported us throughout the academic year. We now look forward to more success in the forthcoming year, with our new team in place from June.”
The Student Achievement Awards Ireland celebrates the work being done by third-level students for the benefit of their college, community and country. With the event, USI is striving to promote public service and volunteering while also recognising the creativity and skill of individuals. Awards were given across categories relating to students’ union campaigns, political activism, broadcast and print media, online media and community engagement. Distinguished people in relevant fields judged the submissions.
