1916 commemorations in Galway

Events will take place across County Galway this EasterWeekendto commemorate the 1916 Rising and the Galwegians who took part in that seismic event.

Republican Sinn Féin commemorations begin on Good Friday at 5pm with a wreath-laying at the Workhouse in Tuam. On Holy Saturday there will be a wreath-laying in Kilcummin cemetery, Oughterard, at 7pm.

On Easter Sunday a commemoration will be held at the Liam Mellows Statue in Eyre Square, preceded by a parade from the cathedral to Eyre Square at 11am.

The main RSF commemoration will take place at the Republican plot at Donoghpatrick Cemetery, Headford, on Easter Sunday with those attending asked to assemble at Queally’s Cross, Caherlistrane, at 3pm for a parade.

Sinn Féin will be holding separate commemorations across the city and county as well, with Dep Aengus Ó Snodaigh, the party’s Dáil spokesperson on Social Protectionand Communities, addressing many of the events.

The main commemoration takes

place at the Liam Mellows Statue, Eyre Square, at 3pm on Easter Saturday, to be addressed by Dep Ó Snodaigh, who will also speak at commemorations in Pearse’s Cottage, Ros Muc, Easter Sunday, at 1pm; at the Thomas Whelan Statue, Clifden, Easter Monday, at 3pm; and in Tooreena Cemetery, Tully Cross, Connemara, at 5pm the same day.

OtherSF1916 commemorations include wreath laying ceremonies in Oranmore, at 6pm on Easter Saturday, and ArdbearCemetery, Clifden, Easter Monday, at 2.30pm.
