Launch of newly discovered Liam O’Flaherty satiric essay

LIAM O’FLAHERTY is celebrated as the author of such short stories as His First Flight, but there is another, often neglected side, to the Aran Islands writer.

O’Flaherty was a novelist whose work challenged the assumptions and mores of Irish society and resulted in several of his novels being banned.

However The Liam & Tom O’Flaherty Society is seeking to rectify this through its lectures and events. Its next event takes place in the Galway City Library on Thursday April 24 at 6pm.

Guest speaker, Dr Frank Shovlin, is senior lecturer on Irish Literature in English at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool, and will give an illustrated talk on Liam O’Flaherty and the English literary agent who ‘discovered’ the Irish writer in London, Edward Garnett.

The event will also see the launch of a hitherto completely unknown satirical text by O’Flaherty, A Cure for Unemployment, a satirical text in the Swiftian mode. This will be launched by Terry McDonough, professor of economics at NUI Galway.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
