CCTV cameras should be installed in “trouble spots” in Salthill and Knocknacarra as a way of both tackling and discouraging anti-social behaviour.
Fianna Fáil Galway City West candidate David Burke is calling on City Hall to consider introducing CCTV cameras. The issue has been raised by a number of residents associations in the area.
Mr Burke argues that the CCTVs would help gardaí manage their resources more effectively and make them more responsive to local complaints. He said a number of dummy locations and signage could also be set up which would also assist local estates deter anti-social behaviour.
Mr Burke said the only incumbent for the introduction of CCTV would be a lack of funds, but that the local property tax could be used to address this.
“In 2015, Galway will pay property tax totalling €3.5 million,” he said. “Ten per cent of this tax should be ringfenced to tackle local issues like this. CCTV would be a first good step in the west of the city to see the benefits of paying such a tax.”
