Corinthians maintain edge over promotion rivals

Corinthians remain in the driving seat for promotion play-off after securing a valuable 12-8 win over fellow contenders UL Bohemians at Cloonacauneen on Saturday.

Having lost their previous two fixtures, Corinthians needed to get back on track with both UL Bohs and Buccaneers closing in. Now four points ahead of their fellow Connacht contenders, Corinthians face Terenure in Lakelands on Saturday (2.30pm ) - the side that has already secured the division 1b crown with an unbeaten run.

It will be a tough fixture for Corinthians, who must also play Belfast Harlequins at home and Malone away to determine this year’s league runners-up, but Phil Pretorious will be taking one game at a time to ensure his players maintain their focus at this crucial stage in the competition.

Last weekend the home side was first to score when, after good play from fullback David Panter and right winger Darin Classen, prop Mark Byrne scrambled in for a touch down, which Gormley converted.

Bohemians eventually got a foothold with a penalty kicked to touch, and from the resulting play outhalf Shane Airey eventually drove over for a fine touch down.

However before the break Corinthians were back on the scoreboard. Influential lock Ultan Dillane secured the line-out before the ball was sent wide with Panter slipping in for the second try to give his side a 12-5 lead.

Bohs reduced the deficit soon after the restart when Bourke kicked a penalty, and maintained the initiative, but the Cloonacauneen outfit defended everything that was thrown at them to secure the valuable points.

Corinthians: D Panter, D Classin, F Gormley (cpt ), C Begley, B Dixon, C Murphy, M Murphy, M Byrne, J Merrigan, F Bealham, U Dillane, G Warde, C Raftery, J Burns, D Phelan.
