THERE IS a peculiarly kid of Irish soul music, one which infuses r’n’b, jazz, rock, and folk, and whose original master, if not creator, is arguably Van Morrison.
Following in those footsteps, but with his own brand of ‘Transatlantic soul’ is Mayo songwriter Niall McCabe and his band, which consists of some of Cork’s top jazz musicians.
McCabe attributes his sound to his growing up on a small Mayo island. “The physical isolation tends to make you think more outwardly and look for connections with the wider world,” he says.
The Niall McCabe band release their debut album Part Of The Light tomorrow, and GoldenPlec has already described it as “oozing with a confidence and swagger that is so desperately absent from our airwaves”.
The Niall McCabe Band play Monroe’s Live tonight at 10pm. Admission is free before 11pm and €10 thereafter.
