After 37 years in local government, county manager Martina Maloney has announced that she is to retire from her role when her contract ends on July 7.
Councillors at Monday’s Galway County Council meeting were left surprised by the announcement but followed it with praising the commitment and dedication shown by Ms Maloney during her time as county manager.
Addressing the chamber Ms Maloney said: “It has been a very challenging time and fulfilling role. I have thoroughly enjoyed my period with the county council but the time has come for me, after 37 years in local government service, to open a new chapter.”
The Clare native has been the county manager for the past seven years. She first came to Galway City Council in 1997 where she held a number of positions including assistant town clerk, director of services for corporate services, community, and enterprise, before serving as acting city manager. She then left her position at Galway City Council to become Louth county manager but returned to Galway County Council to take up the county manager role in 2007
