Huge turnout and exceptional bidding at O’Donnellan and Joyce’s first property auction of 2014

A total of 16 properties were sold by Galway auctioneer Colm O’Donnellan at O’Donnellan & Joyce’s first auction of the year, which took place in the Harbour Hotel last Friday.

The highlight of the afternoon’s auction sales was a three bedroom semidetached residence at No 86 Grattan Park, Salthill, which sold for €330,000, €135,000 above the listed AMV price, after much competitive bidding.

The second property to attract enormous interest was No 13 St Claire’s, a four bedroom detached family home in the much sought after address of Taylor’s Hill, which sold for €625,000. Other interesting sales included a detached property at No 42 Cruachan Park in Rahoon, requiring renovation and modernisation, which reached a sale price of €225,000.

In excess of 300 people eagerly watched the bidding at the auction, which saw a large number of properties selling for well in excess of the listed AMV prices, demonstrating the confidence that is returning to the market and the growing appetite among bidders to secure property in Galway city. The auction highlights the huge demand for properties in and around the city, for investment and in particular for family residences.

Other properties that sold on the day were No 60 Fearann Ri, Doughiska (€100,000 ); Central Tavern, Claregalway (€260,000 ); Unit 5 Millrace House, Tuam (€27,000 ); No 33 Ard na Mara, Salthill (€330,000 ); No 26 Ballybrit Court, Ballybrit (€132,000 ); No 26 Rivergrove, Oranmore (€115,000 ); No 15 Nephin Halls, Castlebar (€50,000 ); St Margaret’s, Taylor’s Hill (€590,000 ); No 5 Rockland Ave, Ballybane (€74,000 ); 12 acres in Loughrea (€67,000 ); Furrymelia West, Barna (€242,000 ); No 15 Ce na Mara, The Docks (€112,000 ); and Clonboo, Corrandulla (€178,000 ).

Speaking after Friday’s auction, Colm O’ Donnellan of O’Donnellan and Joyce said: “The atmosphere in the room was electric and competitive, with phases of very spirited and intense bidding for certain properties. We certainly witnessed an increased confidence in Galway’s property market which further highlights the shortage of quality family homes in desirable locations across Galway city.”
