Monivea kickboxer Brendan Kenny claimed gold at the Irish Open tournament held in Dublin at the weekend.
Kenny, who formed part of Dublin’s Red Star Kickboxing High Performance squad, beat five international kickboxers from Germany, England, Wales, Croatia and Ireland to win gold for the -84kg division.
The tournament attracted some 3,400 elite kickboxers from around the world and Kenny was the only junior competing in a division of senior kickboxers.
The result was a welcome boost for Kenny who is preparing for the junior national eliminations in May to gain a place on the national team that will attend the WAKO World and European championships this year in Italy and Slovenia.
This is the first time that a light continuous WAKO Kickboxing title has been brought to Galway.
