Galway City Council must reinstate road safety as a matter of priority, says Cllr McDonnell

A city councillor has blasted the Galway City Council for the lack of action taken on a request made last November to reinstate road safety signs around the city.

Independent councillor Declan McDonnell has said this week that he is “dismayed” that nothing has been done to reinstate road safety signs which had been at key points around the city but were removed in 2008 to allow for advertising for the Volvo Ocean Race.

According to the councillor the then director of services, Ciaran Hayes, had promised that as soon as the Volvo Ocean Race of 2009 was over the road safety signs would be reinstated. However to date the signs have not been put back up.

“The Transport Department invested a substantial amount of money on these signs and given that road deaths in Ireland are unfortunately on the increase I believe they need to be reinstated as a matter of urgency. The poles to hold these signs are currently being used to advertise comedy festivals, the Christmas Market, and other events around the city, and while these are important in their own right it certainly does not compare to saving a life.

Cllr McDonnell said: “The difficulty I see is that I was reassured by the city manager at our November meeting that these signs would be erected around the city, but to date no action has been taken, so I am asking where are the signs and why are they not erected?”
