Greenfields head north after sobering debut

Greenfields will need to pick themselves from a disappointing debut in the Irish Hockey League when they take on Lurgan Hockey Club on Saturday.

Last weekend Greenfields produced a dream start to their first IHL match, but were left shattered by a late surge from opponents Catholic Institute at Dangan, losing 3-1.

Within two minutes Greenfields were a goal up when, from a corner, Neasa McGettigan’s shot was deflected in by a diving Mary Healy on the far post.

Always looked dangerous on the break, with Elaine Hall leading the attack, Greenfields managed to retain the lead until the second half.

However the Greenfields’ back four of Sarah McDonald, Clodagh Grealy, Catherine Moore and Aine Collins were kept on their toes, and midway through the third quarter CI capitalised on a midfield mix-up and Katie Campbell equalised.

Greenfields responded with waves of attacks through midfielders Ellie Noone, McGettigan, Liz Tighe as forwards Hall, Mary Healy and Sinead Minihan found space in behind the Institute back line. The pressure led to a number of short corners but Greens failed to score, while Miniha’s shot drew a fine save from the Limerick keeper.

Instead, from an intercept seven minutes from time, Insitute’s Carroll made no mistake with a low reverse stick shot into corner of the net. And the home side was denied a deserved bonus point when Carroll deflected a free into the Greenfields’ net from close range just before the final whistle.
