Galway athlete Gary Thornton produced one of the best performances by local athlete when finishing second in Sunday's National Senior Cross-Country Championships in Dundalk IT.
Over a testing course, Thornton and Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrocks, the eventual winner, had an epic battle over the 12km course with the Dublin man only getting away on the last lap.
Thornton has set the standard for Galway City Harriers since finishing second in the Irish u-20 cross-country championships in 1998. He has represented Ireland several times at European and World championships, having won national titles on the road and track.
