Sir Roger Casement was famous for his humanitarianism and his patriotism, but less well known, was his interest in the Irish language.
This neglected aspect of Casement’s life will be the subject of a public lecture, organised by the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, in the Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday March 10 at 8pm.
In Roger Casement and the Irish Language, Prof Nollaig MacCongáil will explore Casement’s introduction to, preoccupation and affinity with, and support for the Irish language and its speakers and promoters.
Born in Derry, Prof MacCongáil has taught in the Department of Celtic Studies, Queen’s University, Belfast; the Department of Irish, NUI Galway, and was NUIG’s Dean of Faculty of Arts from 1994 to 2000, and registrar and deputy-president from 2010-2014.
