Phil Kennedy withdraws from local election race

Phil Kennedy, who had declared her intention to stand as an Independent candidate in the local elections, is to withdraw from the race upon medical advice.

The Bohermore based Ms Kennedy is now calling on Galway City Central voters to support Fianna Fáil councillor Ollie Crowe on May 23.

“I wouldn’t be a believer in endorsing the candidate most local to me,” said Ms Kennedy. “I am supporting Ollie because he is the most effective local representative we have and I am proud to support his campaign.”

Ms Kennedy, who has worked with Cllr Crowe on a number of issues over the years, described him as an “excellent public representative” who endeavours to find “practical solutions to complex issues”.

“He will take on board what you’re saying and see if your suggestions can be implemented, not merely nod and pretend to listen,” she said.

Cllr Crowe has welcomed Ms Kennedy’s support.

“Phil is a person I have huge respect for,” he said. “She’s long been an influence on my own political beliefs with valuable insights and thought-provoking opinions. She does all she can to improve her own community and I look forward to continue working with her in this regard.”

Ms Kennedy has long been involved in campaigning for greater rights for those with intellectual disabilities. She said despite withdrawing from the election, she will “continue to campaign for the social integration of people with intellectual disabilities and on other local causes close to my heart”.
