Sebastian Barry and Roddy Doyle for Cúirt

Two of Ireland’s leading novelists, Sebastian Barry and Roddy Doyle, will be among the writers coming to the 2014 Cúirt International Festival of Literature.

The festival, now in its 29th year, runs from Tuesday April 8 to Sunday 13, and will feature readings from major Irish and international novelists and poets, readings, theatre, book launches, talks, and children’s events.

Sebastian Barry will be reading from his new, war-themed, novel, The Temporary Gentleman, in the Town Hall Theatre on Wednesday April 9 at 8.30pm. Mr Barry is the recipient of the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Prize, the Costa Book of the Year, the Irish Book Award’s Best Novel, the Independent Booksellers Prize, and James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

Roddy Doyle has been one of Ireland’s most popular writers since the publication of The Commitments in the late 1980s. His new novel, The Guts, returns to the former work’s central character, Jimmy Rabbitte. He will be reading in the Town Hall on Thursday 10 at 8.30pm.

Scottish Poet Laureate Liz Lochhead will also be reading at the Town Hall on Friday 11 at 8.30pm. As well as being an acclaimed poet, she is also a successful playwright.

Cúirt 2014 will be launched by author and academic Prof Patrick Lonergan on Tuesday March 4 at 6pm in The House Hotel, Lower Merchants Road. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

The festival programme will be available in hard-copy around the city and to download from www.cúirt.ie.
