Galway WFC face an away trip to Dublin on Sunday to take on DLR Waves who lie just two points below them in the Bus Eireann Women’s National League.
The Galway women jumped into fourth place last weekend with a valuable 1-0 victory over high-flying Wexford Youths in Eamonn Deacy Park, and they will be keen to maintain that momentum.
Wexford, having topped their league cup group, travelled to Galway as favourites, but top scorer Sinead Taylor ensured Galway took the spoils.
In a fast-paced first half both defences were in top form, ensuring little in the way of goal-mouth action. However the second half was a different story. Within three minutes of the restart Galway had two attempts on goal from Lynsey McKey and Keara Cormican and this was a pattern that was to continue for the remainder of the half with GWFC exerting their dominance.
Their smart passing opened up Wexford on numerous occasions, but it was not until the 75th minute that the stalemate was broken. Caroline Carter set up McKey, who went on a mazey run into the box where she was upended and subsequentley awarded a penalty, and Taylor made no mistake, firing low and hard to the left past Mary Rose Kelly in the Wexford net. It was enough for the home side to take all three points.
Manager Nigel Keady said it was a good result after a disappointing cup campaign.
"Although our performances have been good in the last few weeks, we’ve had a couple of disappointing results, so it was great to get a win that moves us up another place in the table.”
