SERIOUS GERMANIC utterances, colourful French character pieces, an amusing Danse Macabre, and ‘skeletal rattlings’ from Wagner and Beethoven, the new concert season from St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church has it all.
Billed as ‘coffee concerts’, the shows will take place in the church from 11am on February 22, March 8, and March 22.
The programme for February 22 will feature Mark Duley on organ performing works by Hesse (‘Prelude and Fugue’ ), Vierne (‘Sicilienne’ and ‘Impromptu’, pièces de fantaisie ), Alain (‘Chant donné’ ), Mendelssohn (Sonata No 1 ), and Bovet (‘Hamburger Totentanz’ ).
On March 8, countertenor and pianist Sam Sytsma, will present a concert of French music including the suite ‘Pour le piano’ by Debussy and songs by Fauré. On March 22, organist David Grealy will perform popular works. There will also be a fundraising table quiz for the choir on March 28.
On Good Friday (April 18 ) at 6pm, St Nicholas’ Chamber Choir Collegium will perform a show entitled, Jerusalem Desolata, a programme of choral music by Byrd and Tallis, viewing the desolation of the Cross through the prism of Biblical references. Chamber Choir Collegium is a new project-based choir including singers from St Nicholas Schola Cantorum.
Coffee and baked goodies will be served at the concerts and tickets are €10 at the door. All proceeds will go to St Nicholas Schola Cantorum.
