Labour to run six candidates in the city

Three women and three men will run for Labour across Galway city’s three electoral wards for May’s local elections to the Galway City Council.

However, the party goes into the elections without veteran councillor Tom Costello, who has been the party’s standard bearer in Galway City East since the early 1990s.

At its recent election selection convention, the local organisation selected sitting councillors Billy Cameron and Colette Connolly to run in Galway City Central. Joining them will be Shantalla-based John McDonagh, who has been involved in the local residents’ association and community employment schemes since the 1980s.

Galway City East will see Cllr Nuala Nolan, who was co-opted onto the council in 2011, joined by Monica Coughlan. Ms Coughlan is a member of the Monivea Park Residents’ Association and St James’ GAA Club. In Galway West Ward, Cllr Niall McNelis was selected to hold the seat he won in 2009
