A GLIMPSE in the street of a girl with blue-dyed hair sets young student on a course that will unleash powerful and often overwhelming emotions and sexual desire.
This is Blue Is The Warmest Colour, the Palm d’Or winning French film which is to be screened in the Town Hall Theatre this Sunday at 8pm.
Adèle becomes fascinated by the blue haired Emma who she glimpses in the street. Before long they are together, Adèle becoming the muse for Emma’s art while she pursues her own path into adulthood and discovers the powerful influence that sexual desire has on the emotions.
A critical and commercial success, the film has won the praise of Steven Spielberg who called it, “a great love story...of deep love and deep heartbreak...we were absolutely spellbound by the amazing performances of the two actresses, and especially the way the director observed his characters and just let the characters breathe.”
Although Variety noted that it “the most explosively graphic lesbian sex scenes”, a factor which has also made the film quite controversial, the overwhelming view of critics was summed by The New York Observer which called it “a major work of sexual awakening” and The Irish Times’ Donald Clarke who said it “gets closer to accurately charting the dynamics of romantic love than any picture in recent memory”.
