Galway FC head into the county for friendly

As Galway FC manager Tommy Dunne continues to build his squad in preparation for the new season, the club has announced it will host its planned friendly with Limerick in Headford.

The new club’s season gets under way with a series of friendlies on February 1 against Sligo Rovers in Eamonn Deacy Park, but it will take on Limerick at the home of Moyne Villa on February 6 (7.45pm ) under lights.

Galway FC chairman Bernie O'Connell says Moyne Villa is a vibrant club in the county that has served Galway soccer.

"Moyne Villa is a stellar example of an ambitious football club rooted in the community and having the enterprise and drive to develop such wonderful facilities, serving its young players and bedding in the game as a central part of community life,” he says.

"The club hosted the first of the Galway League information evenings and that night indicated that the desire for a vibrant Galway team was as much a reality in County Galway as it was in the city.

"We trust those who support Tommy Dunne's lads in Headford will continue to back them in Eamonn Deacy Park during the season ahead. Galway FC aspires to having the same connection with its supporters as the Galway senior football or hurling jersey has for all Galway sport followers."

O’Connell said Galway United had a tradition of playing fixtures in the county from where some of its most passionate supporters hailed.

“In the not too distant past Galway United played friendlies in Castlebar, Ballygar, Corofin, and Loughrea, while Galway United played European football in Ballindereen and An Cheathrú Rua. Many of the club's most passionate supporters were from the county.

"We trust that Galway FC will begin to hold a special place in the hearts of all Galwegians who come to support the club. Looking around the magnificent development in Moyne Villa, we will all appreciate the truth of the old seanfhocal that states 'nach neart go cur le chéile'."

Galway FC season ticket holders will be admitted to the friendly for free.
