Efforts to sell Shannon Oaks Hotel are intensifying, says Higgins

Efforts to sell the Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna are now intensifying, according to Senator Lorraine Higgins.

The Galway East senator has been campaigning to have the hotel reopened and has been liaising with the receiver, Grant Thornton, for the past year. Grant Thornton has now confirmed that the hotel will not be rebuilt it will be sold in its present state.

Senator Higgins said: “I have urged the receiver to put timelines in place for the quick sale of the property so that a canny investor can look to purchase the property and move forward with the development of the site. This is important to give some hope to the 60 people who lost their job when the hotel sadly burned down and the people of Portumna who have been without this amenity for some time.

“The receiver has confirmed to me that while an advised minimum value has yet to be agreed for the property they are currently accepting expressions of interest. It is expected the resort may be sold in one or more lots.”

Senator Higgins concluded: “A hotel of this stature is vital to the revival of Portumna and I would urge any interested investors or groups to make submissions to the auctioneer, DTZ. Progress on the sale of the hotel is essential as Portumna has arguably suffered more than any other town in the county with the recession and then the loss of this essential amenity.”
