THE SUPER 8mm Film Festival, celebrating the Super 8 motion picture format, first released in 1965, and which has made a comeback in recent years, takes place in the Galway City Museum this Saturday.
The festival will involve a day of screenings and discussions presented by French Super 8 film-maker Julien Dorgere, and the Super8 Shots Film Festival.
The festival starts at 1pm with screenings of rare Super 8 archive footage of traditional crafts, followed two short films, to be followed by a discussion.
End Of The Counter, directed by Laura McGann, captures the arrival of the supermarket into Ireland in 1965; and the award-winning Irish Folk Furniture, directed by Tony Donoghue, is a stop-motion animation which captures the process of transforming disregarded pieces of country furniture by renovating them and returning them to the homes they once adorned.
From 3pm, there will be screenings of unique Super 8 films from members of Galway Subaqua Club as well as other local maritime footage from private Irish collections dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. These will be followed by a discussion.
The festival is being organised in conjunction with Folk Fiction: Translations in Material Cultures, an exhibition by visual artist Gareth Kennedy that has been on show at the museum since last October.
