Free HSE course teaches children and parents how to be healthy weights

Fathers have a much greater influence on their children’s diet and physical activity levels than was originally believed, according to the HSE West.

It is spearheading a parent and child activity programme in the city in association with health professionals and Titans Basketball Club.

The initiative, designed to support and instil confidence in parents and children to achieve a healthier weight and lifestyle, is encouraging dads in particular to attend this free eight week event. It is aimed at children aged eight to 13 years and is called “Parents Don’t Weight”.

The programme begins on Tuesday January 21 at Westside Community Centre and runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30 to 7pm until mid March. An open information evening will take place next Thursday.

Paul Gillen, a health promotion officer with the HSE West, says every overweight parent would wish to prevent their child from becoming an unhealthy weight with all the future health risks that brings.

“This programme can start to turn this hope into a reality,” he states. “It will help prevent children who may be at risk of developing an unhealthy weight and support them from putting on any more weight and it will also encourage parents to lose weight through better nutrition and a reduction in sedentary behaviour by increasing their physical activity.”

He explains the activity programme will follow an internationally recognised approach to help parents support their children to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“This Long Term Athletic Development approach is child-centered, covering not only the child’s physical development but also their emotional, mental, nutritional and lifestyle development. One of the goals is to arm parents and child with simple and effective techniques taught by a team of dedicated professionals to achieve a healthier lifestyle and attain a healthy weight moving forward.”

The course will include physical activity as well as sessions with health professionals.

“But most of all it will be a great opportunity for parents and their children to bond and have fun together while improving their health and wellbeing,” outlines Mr Gillen.

Diarmuid, a father who previously participated on the course said it really helped himself and his son to learn new skills, have fun and become closer. “Our whole family now reaps the benefits,” he added.
