ALTHOUGH IT may not get the same attention as London, Manchester, Birmingham, or Glasgow, Sheffield has proven to be a productive and intriguing city for British rock.
The South Yorkshire city has given the world Richard Hawley, Pulp, The Human League, Def Leppard, and Arctic Monkeys. It is also the home of post-rockers 65daysofstatic.
65daysofstatic - Paul Wolinski, Joe Shrewsbury, Rob Jones and Simon Wright - play the Róisín Dubh on Friday January 17 at 9pm, where they will play music from their most recent album Wild Light, as well as from The Fall of Math (2004 ), One Time for All Time (2005 ), The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007 ), We Were Exploding Anyway (2010 ), and Silent Running (2011 ).
The band mix heavy, progressive, guitar-driven instrumental sections with live drums and sampled drums and keyboards. Q praised the band for “the pomp they derive from taking dour post-rock to a rave”.
Fans of the band are known, chiefly among themselves, as 65kids, which is also used by a fansite, 65kids.com, which hosts, among other things, torrents and mp3s of radio sessions, demos, remixes and mash-ups by the band.
