SSE Renewables Moycullen were back on the court on Sunday after a short Christmas break when they travelled to Cork to play current league leaders UCC Demons.
The Cork side, unbeaten in the league this year, powered to a 98-64 victory after a master class in offence in the first quarter.
The young Galway team, punished for every defensive lapse, stemmed the tide a little in the second quarter, but it was a mission impossible as the barrage continued. At times the basket was like a football goal, such was Demons’ accuracy from the field and in particular beyond the arc. Renewed focus on cutting down on errors and being more clinical on offence was the order of the day for the second half, and credit to Moycullen they came out and went toe-to-toe with the league leaders in what was a much better half of basketball for them. While the outcome was never really in doubt, the Westerners regained some pride in that second half and will take some heart from that better second half showing, particularly as they welcome current league champions UL Eagles to the Kingfisher on Saturday (6.30pm ) in their first game of the New Year.
They will go into Saturday’s encounter knowing that intensity, coupled with that elusive consistency throughout the game, is key if they are to come away with the win.
There was some great news for the club with Dylan Cunningham’s selection on the Premier League select team that will travel to England to play their English counterparts in January, while Paul O’Brien has been named as first reserve on the team.
