Galway Youth Orchestra opens 2014 at NUI Galway

The Bailey Allen Hall in NUI Galway will be the venue for the first Galway Youth Orchestra concert of 2014 on Saturday January 4 at 8pm.

One hundred and twenty young people will take part in the concert playing a range of music including jazz, seasonal, classical, and traditional. The four ensembles are conducted by Peter Berrill, John Fleming, Joanne Cater, and Michael Dooley.

The orchestra is delighted to welcome former member of the orchestra Naomi Berrill as its guest on the night. Naomi, who is based in Florence, is a member of the Indaco String Quartet and has performed throughout Europe and the US. As well as being an accomplished cellist Naomi is also a singer and will delight the audience with her own unique style of vocals with cello accompaniment.

GYO will launch that night its new 2014 double bass programme for young people aged between nine and 15 years. The orchestra will lend an instrument for one year to a young person who is willing to take lessons with a suitably qualified double bass teacher and who commits to playing with the orchestra when he or she has learned.

The double bass is a wonderfully versatile instrument which can be played in a range of music genres and GYO is offering a chance to five young people to play one. Contact the GYO on (091 ) 521324 or email [email protected]
