GOAL urges Galway people not to forget their GOAL Mile this Christmas

Galway GOAL Mile organisers, including GOAL’s own Maura Lennon have been busy making calls, sending emails, and issuing general reminders to people throughout the county over the past week, urging them to get out and run, jog, or walk the popular annual event this Christmas, and raise as much money as possible for GOAL’s programmes for the poor.

A record 114 GOAL miles will take place throughout Ireland this year, plus another six overseas in London, New York, Melbourne, Toronto, Abu Dhabi, and The Golan Heights, making it a truly global event for the first time.

“We are looking for as many people as possible to come out on Christmas Day and support the Galway GOAL Miles,” says Maura Lennon, GOAL’s representative in the west of Ireland. “I am organising a Mile at NUIG with Mick Roche, who has been running the Mile here for the last 13 years. Mayor of Galway, Padraig Conneely, will be attending on Christmas Day, while the Galway football team is supporting us and we are hoping some of the lads will come along to NUIG or to the Mile at An Spideal, which is also taking place on Christmas Day.”

The NUIG Mile will take place at the Dangan Running Track from 10am to 1pm; while people are being asked to congregate at the Texaco Garage in An Spideal at 12 noon.

Some of Ireland’s current and former sporting stars, such as Jamie Heaslip, Ian Humphreys, Eamonn Coghlan, and Sonia O’Sullivan have teamed up with GOAL this year to boost participation, and introduce the event to an even wider audience. Indeed, Coghlan and O’Sullivan have even gone a step further by holding their own Miles in Dublin and Melbourne respectively.
