The establishment of a fire brigade for South Connemara and defending the rights of people to cut turf will be key election priorities for Republican Sinn Féin’s Tomás Ó Curraoin.
Cllr Ó Curraoin will be defending the Galway County Council seat he first won in 2009 at next May’s Local Elections. He was chosen as the RSF candidate at the party’s recent election convention in the Connemara Coast Hotel. Matt Ó Brádaigh was selected as director of elections.
Speaking after the convention, Cllr Ó Curraoin said that along with the issues of a fire brigade and turf cutting, he will also be campaigning on housing, roads, footpaths, planning issues, and the erection of bus shelters and lay-bys.
“I will continue to stand by small farmers and fishermen,” he said, “and I will continue to raise issues such as employment for our youth and the care needs of our elderly.”
RSF party president Des Dalton described Cllr Ó Curraoin as “an Irish Republican to his fingertips” and said his work rate in the county council was “second to none”.
“Many people are very disillusioned with the establishment parties,” he said. “Tomás is the type of candidate people are looking for to give political leadership. Tomás represents all that is good about community politics and activism.”
