Speeding motorists and ‘rat runners’ in Renmore are a danger to drivers, walkers, and cyclists, and traffic calming measures must be installed to “curb their activities”.
This is the view of Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty who is calling on the Galway City Council to install such measures on Renmore Road and in Renmore Park.
These roads are situated within a residential area, which for some time has been experiencing a very high volume of traffic from motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, as well as extra Army personnel who have been assigned to Renmore Barracks since the closure of some of their units throughout the State.
The Renmore road is a feeder road also to Bon Secours Hospital, GMIT, two churches, two national schools, a number of sporting clubs, businesses, plus a high number of residential dwellings.
Residents are concerned about possible fatalities, citing the most recent fatality of two years ago, and the fact that the coroner at the inquest recommended public lighting be upgraded where the accident took place.
“While it is difficult to curtail extra traffic flow, it is incumbent on the city council to carry out the necessary traffic calming measures in order to reduce the risk of potential accidents or fatalities in the future in this area,” said Cllr O’Flaherty.
She has made representations to the council’s roads engineers to make these roads safer in the interest of pedestrians and road users alike.
