EXHIBITIONS FEATURING works from established artists to students and an exhibition of notebooks by Will Self and John Rocha, open and are running in Galway this month.
Medley, the new exhibition from Lorg Printmakers opens in the Town Hall Theatre bar today and runs until Sunday January 12. It features more than 20 works from Galway and Irish printmakers.
A Midwinter’s Dream features work by Yvonne King and Reingard Gahan. It will be officially opened tomorrow by John Durning at 6pm in Unit 2 Clifden Court, Bridge Street, Clifden.
It will feature King’s freshwater pearl and gemstone silver jewellery, paintings of the sea, islands, and coast of Connemara; and photographs. Gahan’s watercolour and oils range from Connemara landscapes, to portraits, to paintings of animals. The exhibition runs until January 4.
Also opening this evening at 6pm is All Things Integral by Lisa Sweeney in the Norman Villa Gallery, Salthill. The guest speaker will be sculptor John Behan.
The paintings feature her trademark crows and rooks. Speaking of the show, the artists says: “I am intrigued by the banal’ the everyday, the often overlooked and undervalued elements within the landscape and our perception of it.” It runs until Saturday 21.
Starting tomorrow, and running until Sunday December 15, Kinvara Area Visual Arts is holding a pre-Christmas art exhibition in the Pop-Up Gallery on the Market Square, featuring works by 15 local artists Anne Korff, Blaithin Ni Leannain, Brian Twomey, Cath Taylor, Diane Reid, Doreen Wynne, Eidin Ferguson, Fiona Rooney, Frank Sanford, Julia O’Keefe, Marian Coady, Mary Donoghue, Mary Roberts, Pam Fleming, Patricia Timmons, and Rosaleen Tanham. Ten per cent of sales of the works will go to the Philippine Red Cross.
Sunday at 7pm sees the opening of And They Flew II..., the second annual student exhibition by the students of artist and teacher Denise Hogan in the Renzo Café, Eyre Street. There will be works in oils, water-colours, and acrylics. Work will be for sale. The exhibition runs until January 19.
The same day, also at 7pm, sees the opening of the fifth annual Christmas Crackers exhibition of paintings by students of Geraldine Folan’s art classes, in the Hotel Clybaun, Knocknacarra. It will be opened by Galway artist Ciaran Tobin. There will be a mulled wine reception and original artwork for sale.
A very different kind of exhibition is Taking Note or The Curious Eye, currently on in the Art Gallery, the quadrangle, NUI Galway. It focuses on noticing and note-taking and features notes and notebooks by writers Will Self and Mike McCormack, a storyboard notebook from John Huston, notes by musician Jurgen Simpson, fashion designer John Rocha, and various visual artists. There are also drawings by builders, notes by birdwatchers, a fragrant notebook from the Burren Perfumery, and notebooks from the NUIG archives.
Organised by Robin Jones, the exhibition considers the relationship of writing and drawing to note taking, and of how people ‘take note’ in a variety of ways. It runs until December 20. The gallery is open from 12 noon to 4pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays.
