Waterboys to revisit Fisherman’s Blues

THE FULL majestic expanse of Galway Bay now opened on our left, while to our right lay a strange, rocky land of hills and ancient stone walls. I began to get goosebumps.

“The wildness of the land and the light on the bay did something fateful to me and I turned and said to Dunford, with a sudden certainty ‘This is the land of my soul!’”

So writes Mike Scott in his autobiography Adventures Of A Waterboy, about his discovery of An Spidéal and Connemara in the late 1980s, from which would emerge The Waterboys’s majestic and acclaimed 1988 album, Fisherman’s Blues.

The original band - Mike Scott, Steve Wickham, Anthony Thistlethwaite, and Trevor Hutchinson - are reuniting for the first time since 1990, along with drummer Ralph Salmins, to perform Fisherman’s Blues Revisited at Leisureland, Salthill, on Sunday December 22.

The band will perform the album in its entirety, making the 25th anniversary of its release, as well as favourites and hits from across their 1985 - 1988 era.

“We won’t be playing the original Fisherman’s Blues album in order or anything tame like that,” said Mike Scott. “We’ll be using the band’s vintage repertoire as a starting point for a new blast of the freewheeling, improvised spirit of The Waterboys in those days.”
