A pledge to invest between €10,000 and €15,000 in upgrading the facilities of a GAA pitch in Shantalla has been made by the Galway City Council.
The pledge, which will allow for the installation of nets and improvements to the playing surface, came following meetings of St Michael’s GAA Club officials, city council officials, and Fianna Fáil Galway City Central councillor Ollie Crowe.
St Michael’s has been without a regulation size playing pitch for a number of years since the start of works on Seamus Quirke Road. The club had been able to hold games for teams up to u-16 level, but that pitch will no longer be possible to use once works start on Westside Sports Complex.
However the GAA pitch in Shantalla will be available to St Michael’s while works continue on Westside Sports Complex.
“This is a positive first step and a sign of good faith by the council that it is committed to working with St Michael’s,” said Cllr Crowe, “and to ensure the club has adequate facilities in the interim period while works at Westside Sports Complex are proceeding.”
Further meetings will be held in the coming weeks to find suitable facilities for St Michael’s teams. Cllr Crowe said it was “important to get this issue fully resolved as soon as possible” to allow the club plan for the coming season.
