THE WHY Not? Adventure Film Festival is taking place in An Taibhdhearc, Middle Street, on Saturday November 30 from 7pm to 10pm.
The event will see the screening of daredevil adventure sport films from Ireland and across the globe, including the Irish premiere of McConkey .
McConkey tells the story of freeskiing and ski-BASE jumping pioneer Shane McConkey who passed away at the tragically young age of 39.
From his earliest days, to his big yellow “handicam” in college, to his budding life as a ski film star, Shane wrote his own movie. The red light was always on. More than a thousand hours of archive material were the building blocks of a film described by The New York Times as both “inspiring” and “heartbreaking”.
The adventure film festival also boasts a wide selection of short films. Speaking about the festival, organiser Graham Clarke said: “There’s more to this festival than just screening world class adventure films. We also want people to have a unique experience that creates a deeper connection between the film and the audience. One of our aims with the festival is to find new ways to innovate within the standard format you see at adventure film festivals.”
This year the festival has partnered with Headphone Disco to bring the concept of the silent disco to a movie. The audience will be able to choose from several different soundtracks to listen to while they watch one of the films.
All festival goers will also be in with the chance to win a paid Concern Challenge four day hill walking trip to Ben Nevis, Scotland, or choose from subsidised trips to the Himalayas, Mt Kilimanjaro, or touring Kenya.
