The Galway sporting world will be getting behind Olympic Boxing Club’s Frankie Cleary who is guaranteed a bronze medal at least at the European Junior Championships in Russia.
Cleary will meet Azerbaijan’s Umid Rustamov tomorrow for a place in Saturday’s 50kg final.
The young light-flyweight was impressive in his quarter-final win over Gagig Pozoyan from Georgia, scoring a unanimous judges’ decision in Anapa, Russia. Previously he overcame Zoravor Petrasian of the Ukraine in a split decision in the last 16.
Cleary, winner of three Irish titles, is one of 11 Irish boxers at the 26-nation championship and is flying the flag for Galway and Olympic Boxing Club. His cousin James Cleary has also represented the club and Ireland at the world junior championships.
