Sexual assault accused sent for trial

A 30-year-old man has been sent forward for trial to the next sitting of Galway Circuit Criminal Court charged with one count of sexual assault.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday where Sergeant John Gormally gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused in relation to sexually assaulting a woman on the east side of the city on July 22, 2012, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape )(Amendment ) Act 1990, as amended by Section 37 of the Sex Offences Act 2001.

Inspector Ernie Whyte told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial.

Judge Mary Fahy made the order for return for trial to the next sitting of Galway Circuit Court commencing November 26.
