Public lecture on a Connemara communist and capitalist

Two Connemara cousins, Tom O’Flaherty and Máirtín Mór McDonogh, were political polar opposites and had widely different careers, and both are the subject of an upcoming public lecture.

The lecture, Caipitlí as Oileán Chrapaigh; Cumannach as Árainn (A Capitalist from Crappagh Island; a Communist from Aran ) takes place in the Moore Institute, NUI Galway, on Thursday November 21 at 4.45pm.

Independent county councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig will discuss Tom O’Flaherty, a brother of writer Liam O’Flaherty. In Cumannach as Árainn - Thomas J O’Flaherty agus an FBI, he will explore US intelligence interest in the Aranman’s activities in the States. He will also look at the history of Aran and the O’Flaherty clan.

Jackie Uí Chionna, holder of the Thomas McDonogh Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, is writing a biography of Martin ‘Mór’ McDonogh, and she will discuss his relationship with Tom O’Flaherty.

The talk is presented by The Liam & Tom O’Flaherty Society and will be a session of the inaugural conference of the Irish centre for the Histories of Labour & Class. All are welcome.
