Work is due to start this month on new GAA and soccer pitches and a children’s playground for Westside, with a local councillor hailing it as “great news” for the area.
At Monday’s city council meeting, confirmation was given that following a tender process, City Hall has issued an offer letter to the preferred tenderer. A moratorium period, running up to November 14, will allow other contractors who tendered for the project to lodge any comments.
The works will include construction of a new GAA pitch, a soccer pitch, a training area, a running track, a new children’s playground, an adventure play area, exercise equipment, as well as new pathways, drainage, entrance improvements, and ducting.
Labour city councillor Colette Connolly has welcomed the development. She said: “St Michael’s GAA Club and the people of Westside have suffered significantly due to the loss and disruption of facilities for the duration of the Seamus Quirke Road improvement works and also the loss of recreational and amenity zoned lands to accommodate the road widening.”
Site investigation works were carried out on site in July last and completed in August. Cllr Connolly said she is relieved that council officials confirmed on Monday night that no issues in relation to the site arose following these works.
