Freddie Mercury, Albert Einstein, Friedrich Nietzsche, Charlie Chaplin, Lemmy, Friedrich Engels, and Willy O’Dea are famous for their moustaches and Galway men can emulate them from tomorrow.
Movember, the month long annual event which involves growing a moustache for November in order to raise funds to fight prostrate cancer and raise awareness of men’s health issues, starts tomorrow.
Galwaymen who want to take part and become an Irish Mo Bro can register at www.Movember.com They must start the month clean shaven then have the remaining four weeks to grow a ‘tache.
Among those taking part this year will be Irish rugby international and Leinster player Cian Healy, Coronas frontman Danny O’Reilly, Irish rock outfit Wounds, MMA champions Cathal Pendred and Chris Fields, and Ger Gilroy and Dave McIntyre from Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
Women can also become involved in Movember by becoming a Mo Sista. Mo Siatas organise events, fundraise or simply support the men in their life by encouraging them to grow for the month.

More than 2,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland each year and one in eight Irish men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The money raised in Ireland from Movember 2013 will go to the Irish Cancer society and the Movember Foundation’s global research initiative Global Action Plan.
The GAP aims to accelerate prostate cancer outcomes by bringing together the best researchers from around the world. GAP facilitates a new and unprecedented level of global research collaboration, not previously seen within the prostate cancer community.
“As well as raising much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s initiative, Action Prostate Cancer,” said Movember Ireland country manager Neil Rooney, “Movember continues to shine a light on the issue of men’s health in Ireland. Movember gets men talking about health issues which results in early detection of prostate cancer.”
Movember comes to a close on Saturday November 30 and a ‘Gala Parté’ will be held to mark the close of events. The Galway Advertiser will have further details on Galway Movember events in the paper and on our Facebook page.
