Galway WFC take a break from action for the next two weeks and return on November 9 away to Wexford Youths.
With the Ireland women’s team playing Slovenia in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday and with the series seven fixture against Castlebar Celtic postponed due to the Mayo side’s involvement in the FAI Cup, it will be welcome breather for the Galway women after their first six games in the National League.
Last weekend they faced title chasing Peamount at Eamonn Deacy Park where Irish international Stephanie Roche, whose stunning goal against Wexford became a You Tube sensation last week, was once again in scoring form.
The Dublin striker scored a brace of goals to help Peamount United run out 5-2 winners over Galway WFC in the Bus Eireann Women’s National League.
The first came on 20 minutes, and although Galway battled well for the remainder of the half in front of a sizeable home crowd, they remained 0-1 down at the break.
Within three minutes of the second half Peamount, who boasted five starters who had been named in the Republic of Ireland squad to face Slovenia next week, extended their lead through Ruth Comerford, but the Galway women were stung into action and Sinead Taylor pulled one back from the penalty spot.
Galway created a number of chances to equalise with Lynsey McKey coming closest, but it was Galwegian Julie-Ann Russell who struck for Peamount next with the in-form Roche following up just three minutes later.
Galway battled hard and the WNL’s top scorer Sinead Taylor got her second with a delightful chip over Peamount keeper Monica McGuirk.
However Irish international Aine O’Gorman, who is one of the five travelling to Slovenia , finished the scoring for Peamount after some neat passing on the edge of the box unlocked the GWFC defence.
