Moycullen receive a boost from energy sponsor

Moycullen basketball, now with a new sponsor on board, head to Ulster to face Belfast Star on Sunday.

The team, renamed SSE Renewables Moycullen, is still looking for its first Premier League win, having lost to UCD Marian at its first home game of the season at NUIG Kingfisher. The new sponsorship comes as a big boost to the club, which is the only west of Ireland club competing at the top level in men’s basketball,

SSE Renewables is Ireland’s largest renewable energy developer through wind farms, hydro, marine and solar projects.

At the launch, Moycullen Basketball chairman Haulie Dowd said: “We are delighted to be welcoming SSE Renewables as the new power behind Moycullen men’s premier team. Funding our flagship team takes a significant amount of money each season. Without the support of SSE Renewables we would find it almost impossible to have a team compete at the top level with all the benefits that has for every team in the club, so we’re delighted to have SSE Renewables involved.”

Speaking at the launch John O’Sullivan, SSE Renewables development project manager, commented: “We’re extremely proud at SSE Renewables to be the new power behind Moycullen Basketball’s men’s Premier League team. We’re looking forward to putting our energy behind SSE Renewables Moycullen all the way this season and to supporting the club’s administrators, volunteers, and fans as well.”

Last weekend SSE Renewables Moycullen, led by Michael Callaghan and Nollaig Cunningham, proved more than a match for UCD Marion and, with some excellent defence, they went into the quarter break just three points adrift.

The second quarter was again a nip and tuck affair, but with just three minutes remaining, Moycullen found themselves on the wrong side of the referees, resulting in technical fouls for a Moycullen player and two for the coach. This gave UCD Marian a massive boost and what had been turning into a great game was suddenly a 20-point lead for the Dublin team at the interval. SSE Renewables were never able to get back into the game in the second half and the game finished in an easy win for Marian.
