Put pen to paper for a good cause

Following the success of the inaugural Dead Good Poetry Competition, the Galway Rape Crisis Centre is delighted to announce This is a Story....a Flash Fiction competition in association with celebrated Galway author Mike McCormack.

Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature of extreme brevity but it is not a new form of literature, Ernest Hemingway famously wrote a six-word story (“For sale: baby shoes, never worn” ). Despite the limited word count, flash fiction manages to pack in expansive plots, complex characters, and a whole variety of styles and themes. It is said that Anton Chekhov could “speak briefly on long subjects”, and Raymond Carver liked to get in and out of his stories as quickly as possible! This is a Story...invites entries of original unpublished work of up to 500 words, regardless of theme and writers are welcome to enter more than story, the deadline for entry is January 14 and first prize is €500!

Mike McCormack has published four books of fiction and was awarded the Rooney Prize for Literature in 1996. His collection of short stories was a New York Times Book of the Year and in 2006, Notes from a Coma was shortlisted for the Irish Novel of the Year Award. The fee for entry is €5 (or 3 entries for €10 ) with all proceeds to the GRCC . For full competition details contact fundra [email protected] or 0852462959
