New children’s books from Galway authors

OF ALL the things to inspire a children’s book, veteran and outspoken journalist and broadcaster Vincent Browne does not seem to be one of them.

Surprisingly though, Browne is the unlikely inspiration behind new children’s book Uinseann Donn by Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, published by Connemara company Futa Fata. It happened when Tadhg was watching TV3’s Tonight with Vincent Browne, which inspired a thought about a big, brown, combative Gaelgoir grizzly bear called Uinseann Donn.

The fruits of Tadgh’s thoughts has now produced a striking children’s picture book, illustrated in water colours by Hungarian artist Írisz Agócs.

Another Galway writer with a new children’s book is Dolores Andrew-Gavin, who has published the first in a series of bi-lingual English/Irish mythological stories.

Lorcan and the Magic Whistle/Lorcán Agus An Fheadóg Draíochta will be launched in Charlie Byrnes Bookshop this Saturday at 11am. There will be a reading from the book and signing, as well as activities and sweets for the children.

The books, as well as being about fun loving fairies in Barna Woods, deal with issues such as bullying and dyslexia. See www.themythicfairy.com
