Wagner, Nietzsche, and Engelbert Humperdinck

RICHARD WAGNER and Friedrich Nietzsche were once close friends but a serious falling lead to the philosopher vomiting in public after hearing the composer’s newest work.

There will, however, be a kind of reconciliation when the music of Wagner, and a song written by Nietzsche are performed by tenor Paul McNamara, pianist Philip Mayers, and narrator Helen Gregg at The Song, In Truth, Is Not Mine... on Tuesday October 15 at 8pm in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway, for a Music For Galway/Wagner Society of Ireland concert.

The programme will hear works by CV Stanford, including poems by Heinrich Heine he set to music; Franz Liszt; Nietzsche’s ‘Das Zerbrochene Ringlein’; Hugo Wolf; Henri Duparc; Tchaikovsky; and Grieg.

There will also be three pieces by Engelbert Humperdinck (no, not he who sang ‘Please Release Me’ ), but the original bearer of the name who lived from 1854 to 1921.

Helen Gregg will read excerpts from articles in The Irish Times and The Daily Express reporting on the 1876 Bayreuth Festival, as well as diary entries, letters, and reports of Stanford and his colleagues about the event.
