Galway WFC return to the capital this Sunday for the second week in a row to take on Bus Éireann Women’s National League champions Raheny United in Morton Stadium, Santry (2pm ).
They make the trip fresh from last week’s victory which saw them put four past Shamrock Rovers without reply in TallaghtStadium, including a hat trick from Sinead Taylor.
However this weekend’s fixture will be a strong barometer for Galway in their first national league season. Raheny are clear league leaders with four wins from four, and have scored a whopping 20 goals to date. Manager Nigel Keady, who praised his team’s performance last week, is now hoping for more of the same against the champions.
“We had a number of weeks off, so it was good to get the game under the belt and come away with a win. Raheny United also maintained their remarkable start to the season. We will be up against it on Sunday, but we are hopeful we can put a dent in their 100 per cent record.”
Last weekend’s 4-0 win over Shamrock Rovers lifted the Galway women into third on the table - two points behind Peamount and five adrift of Raheny.
Galway carved several chances in the first quarter, but it took until the 41st minute to break the stalemate when Grainne Barrett’s free kick from the edge of the box opened the scoring.
Galway doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Sinead Taylor popped up in the box for her first of the day. After the break she converted a spot kick, before completing her hattrick midway through the half.
