Three films from the Arab Mediterranean

THE GALWAY Film Society will screen three films in the Town Hall Theatre this weekend, all of them from the southern Mediterranean region.

Moroccan film Zero will be screened on Saturday at 4pm. This bold and atmospheric exercise in crime noir drama, set in Casablanca, features a wonderfully intense performance by Younes Bouab. Overwhelmed by the corruption that surrounds him, and by the constant needs of his disabled, abusive, father, he has to make a change and turn his life around.

The next two films will be shown on Sunday. First at 6pm is Egypt/United Arab Emirates film Coming Fourth By Day. Soad lives in Cairo with her mother and a father incapacitated by a stroke. Frustrations between mother and daughter surface, but will Soad make her break for freedom? The film won Best Director and the International Film Critics Award at the 2012 Abu Dhabi Film Festival.

At 8.15pm Lebanese film The Attack will be shown. Palestinian Amin Jaafari, has successfully negotiated the religious/cultural/ political divide working and living in Tel Aviv as an admired surgeon and fully integrated into Israeli society. But this perfect life is upended when a suicide bomb in a local restaurant kills 17 people and police suspect his wife was involved.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 or www.tht.ie
